Upwork's third quarter showed a marketplace splitting in two. In its results for the three months to September(opens in a new tab), gross services volume, the total that clients paid freelancers, fell 10% to $914 million, and active clients dropped 10% to 717,000. Inside that shrinking total, work billed by freelancers with AI skills grew 55% from a year earlier, to an annualized run rate of nearly $450 million.

On the earnings call(opens in a new tab), chief executive Hayden Brown put the quarter's AI figure at $112 million, about one dollar in every eight spent on the platform. She said AI strategy and consulting work was up more than 40%, and that low-value work is continuing to roll off the platform. The finance chief linked that loss to AI. The plain reading: clients are doing the small, generic jobs themselves with AI tools and paying people for the work those tools cannot do alone.

Read the 55% with care. Upwork has changed its yardstick. It used to count jobs whose posts asked for AI; it now counts work done by freelancers who list AI skills on their profiles. Some of that growth is people adding a skill to a profile, not new demand. Upwork also gave no figures for what an individual AI freelancer earns, and it keeps roughly 20 cents of every dollar that flows through the marketplace.

There is a newer kind of client too. Upwork opened a server in August that lets AI agents, software that acts on a person's behalf, draft job posts and search for freelancers directly. Brown said work started that way grew more than 150% from September to October. The base is small, but the buyer reading your profile may no longer be a person.

If you sell work on Upwork or a similar marketplace, rewrite your profile this week around the specific AI work you can deliver and show it in one finished example. Then compare your last six months of jobs with the work Upwork says is leaving, and plan to move away from it.
